How to make the default 'Country' property a dropdown

November 24, 2023

Are you tired of manually typing in countries, leading to errors and inconsistencies, when updating your HubSpot properties? In this tutorial, we'll guide you through a step-by-step process to enhance your HubSpot setup, allowing you to effortlessly select countries from a dropdown menu instead of relying on individual text entries.

Step 1: Navigate to Properties

The first step is to access the properties in HubSpot. Properties are the fields you use to store information. To do this, go to "Settings," scroll down to "Properties," and choose "Contact Properties." You can also apply the same process to other categories like companies.

Step 2: Locate the Existing Country Property

Once in the contact properties, find the existing property related to countries. In this case, search for "country" to locate the relevant option. Note that some properties, especially those created by HubSpot, may have limitations on modification.

Step 3: Creating a New Country Property

To avoid extensive changes to the existing property, opt for creating a new one. Click on "Create a Property" and name it, for instance, "Country Dropdown." This new property will serve as your improved country selection dropdown.

Step 4: Configure Dropdown Options

As you set up the new property, you'll want to configure the dropdown options. Instead of manually entering countries, take advantage of HubSpot's automated list. Load the country options and organize them as needed. You can also set the order for better usability.

Step 5: Customize Display Names

Consider customizing the display names for better clarity. While the user sees "Country," internally, you might label it as "Country Dropdown" to avoid confusion with the old property. Adding a brief description can help your team understand the purpose of the new property.

Step 6: Integration with Forms

If you plan to use this dropdown in forms for clients or contacts, ensure the "Use in forms" option is selected during the property creation process. This ensures that the dropdown is available for selection in the forms you create.

Step 7: Organize and Prioritize

For better organization, you can arrange your custom properties. You may want to group them or order them alphabetically to enhance accessibility for your team members.

Step 8: Update Existing Records (Optional)

If you have existing records with the old country property, you can use HubSpot's bulk update feature. Filter the records, select them, and edit in bulk to update the country property efficiently.

By following these steps, you can significantly improve your HubSpot setup, making it more user-friendly and reducing the likelihood of errors in country selection.
